Satyajit Ray was an Indian filmmaker who is considered by many to have been one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He was born on May 2, 1921, in Calcutta, India. He earned a degree in economics and then went on to study at the Government College of Art & Craft in Calcutta.

Ray began making films in 1955 with his debut film Pather Panchali, a critically acclaimed Bengali-language film which earned him multiple awards including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This initial success was followed by a number of other acclaimed films such as The Music Room (1958). His films often focused on Indian culture and specifically explored the themes of poverty and tradition. Some of his best-known films include Apu Trilogy (1955-1959), Charulata (1964), The Chess Players (1977), Days and Nights in the Forest (1970) and The Home and the World (1984). Rays body of work also included illustrations, sketches and essays. While his films focused primarily on Bengali culture, he was also equally concerned with universal themes. The themes he explored in his films were often thought-provoking and intended to make audiences reflect upon their lives. Throughout his career, Ray received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to cinema. He was made an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992 and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Academy Awards in 1992. Ray also won two National Film Awards, twenty-one International Film Festival awards, and a range of other honors. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1992. Satyajit Ray died on April 23, 1992, in Calcutta. He left an indelible mark on cinema and is considered a master of subtlety, nuance and emotional complexity. Ray’s films continue to inspire generations of filmmakers around the world. Ray's films are a masterful blend of his immense technical expertise and artistry. From his use of music, costumes and lighting to his sensitive portrayal of complex characters, Ray’s films remain some of the finest examples of filmmaking in the world. He had a knack for creating memorable moments that remain etched in the minds of viewers.
